About Cathedral Invitational

History

We would like to acknowledge that Cathedral Lodge and Golf Club is located on the lands of the Taungurung people, and we wish to acknowledge them as Traditional Owners. We would also like to pay respects to their Elders, past and present, and Aboriginal Elders of other communities.

Cathedral Lodge & Golf Club was inspired by a vision to create something truly unique in Australian Golf. Set within the beautiful Victorian Northeast region and nestled within the spectacular Australian landscape.

The land in which Cathedral sits today was purchased in early 2004. The area has special significance to David and Sonya Evans. Sonya is fifth generation of the Dobson Family, who are local and significant community contributors. Cathedral Lodge covers 300+ acres of the Evans Family farm. The family envisaged the property would one day play host to Australia’s most exclusive, and at the same time, welcoming private golf clubs.

After years of experiencing unique and highly tailored golf clubs around the world, the vision to create Australia’s very own was brought to life. This translated into Cathedral Lodge and Golf Club, located in the heart of the Australian countryside.

The dream was shared with Greg Norman, a friend of the Evans family. Our aim was to create something uniquely Australian and at the same time to furnish the land with the most beautiful 18-hole golf course ever seen on Australian soil.

The vision started to become a reality. A plan was formulated which included a combination of researching famous and unique private golf clubs throughout the world. The Greg Norman Golf Course Design (GNGCD) mandate was to design a golf course to compliment the environment.

This combined approach was envisaged to be both powerful, restrained and appreciated by all members, their families, and guests. At the same time, it was essential for the design to highlight the countryside that is quintessentially Australian.

The Course

Set in the beautiful Victorian North-East region amongst spectacular Australian landscape, Cathedral Lodge covers 300+ acres of the Evans family farm. This par-72, 18-hole championship course with seemingly never-ending views, is backdropped by the rolling hills of the Cathedral Ranges. The aim was to create something uniquely Australian. At the same time, we were committed to furnish the land with the most beautiful 18-hole golf course ever seen on Australian soil, unique in it’s canyon shape.

The course features a natural ridge which runs through the middle, requiring players to play up one side of the ridge and back down the other. The design takes advantage of the running creeks, natural gorges and native flora and fauna to create a unique experience on each hole and showcase the beauty of the landscape. Designed with playability in mind, the exceptional design will thrill amateurs and professionals alike.

The spectacular backdrop of the Cathedral mountains beautifully frames many of the holes, with a signature hole being the uphill par four 5th hole, linking the two valleys in the course. Other key features include a shared tee box on the 14th and 18th hole and a ‘flyover’ on the 6th. The course also boasts a magnificent finishing hole with a split fairway. Cathedral Lodge and Golf Club is unlike anything seen in the world.

Designed by Greg Norman Golf Course Design and opening in October 2017, the golf course offers 18 holes meandering through the breath-taking Australian bush setting. Fairways of Santa Ana couch lead to pristinely manicured greens of T1 Bent grass and golfers share the course with the local fauna including kangaroos, wombats, kookaburras, eagles and even the less appealing native snake varieties – please make sure you keep an eye out for them in the warmer months!
